Giedo van der Garde, born on April 25, 1985, in Rhenen, Netherlands, is a distinguished former racing driver and broadcaster. He began his journey in competitive kart racing at the tender age of nine, quickly rising through the ranks of motorsport. His karting career peaked in 2002 when he clinched the senior World Championship title, paving the way for his transition to junior formulae.
In 2008, van der Garde achieved his first major championship victory in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series with P1. His impressive performances in the GP2 Series over four seasons caught the attention of Formula One teams, leading to his signing with Caterham in 2013. He made his Formula One debut at the Australian Grand Prix, although the season proved challenging for Caterham, with van der Garde's best finish being fourteenth in Hungary.
After a tumultuous stint with Caterham, where he was unable to retain his seat for 2014, van der Garde joined Sauber as a reserve driver. Despite being contracted as a full-time driver for 2015, he faced a setback when Sauber opted for Felipe Nasr, resulting in a multi-million pound settlement after he sought international arbitration.
Transitioning to sportscar racing in 2016, van der Garde joined G-Drive Racing, where he excelled in the European Le Mans Series, winning the championship in his debut season. He continued to compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the IMSA SportsCar Championship, making six appearances at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. After a successful career, he retired at the end of 2023 and embraced a new role as a full-time commentator and pundit for Viaplay.
