Gigi Fernández, born on February 22, 1964, is a distinguished former professional tennis player from Puerto Rico. With an illustrious career, she secured a remarkable seventeen major doubles titles and proudly represented the United States, clinching two Olympic gold medals. Her exceptional skills on the court propelled her to the world No. 1 ranking in doubles, while she also achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 17 in 1991.
After retiring from professional tennis in 1997 at the age of thirty-three, Fernández transitioned into a multifaceted career as a tennis coach, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. She has successfully merged her passions for tennis and travel, offering unique tennis experiences tailored for enthusiasts. Through her innovative doubles program, The Gigi Method, she imparts the art and science of doubles to players of all skill levels.
In response to personal adversity, specifically the flooding of her home during Hurricane Helene, Fernández founded Tennis for Hope. This initiative aims to support individuals within the tennis community who have been affected by natural disasters. Her contributions to the sport and her community have been recognized with her induction as the first Puerto Rican into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
