Gigi Ibrahim

Gigi Ibrahim, an Egyptian-American journalist and human rights defender, was born on February twelfth, nineteen eighty-eight, in Long Beach, California. Raised by Egyptian parents, she moved to Egypt at a young age and lived there until she was fourteen. After returning to California, she attended a local Catholic high school, graduating in two thousand five. She initially enrolled at Orange Coast College before transferring to The American University in Cairo in two thousand eight, where she became actively involved with the Revolutionary Socialists organization and earned a degree in political science in two thousand ten.

During the Egyptian revolution in two thousand eleven, Ibrahim emerged as a prominent citizen journalist and activist. Utilizing Twitter as her platform, she documented the protests and played a crucial role in bringing attention to the events unfolding in her homeland. Her insightful tweets not only informed the public but also assisted human rights organizations in tracking arrests and state violence, making her a recognizable figure in Western media coverage of the revolution.

Following the coup d'état in two thousand thirteen, Ibrahim made the decision to remain in Egypt, continuing her commitment to activism and protests. Her dedication to social change extended beyond journalism; she later co-founded a shoe manufacturing company in Cairo, showcasing her entrepreneurial spirit and desire to contribute to her community.
