Gilbert Stuart

Gilbert Stuart, born on December third, seventeen fifty-five, in the Rhode Island Colony, is celebrated as one of America's premier portraitists. His artistic journey led him to create an impressive body of work, with a particular focus on capturing the likenesses of prominent figures of his time.

Among his most renowned creations is the unfinished portrait of George Washington, initiated in seventeen ninety-six, commonly known as the Athenaeum Portrait. This iconic image not only served as a model for numerous commissioned copies but also became a lasting symbol of American heritage, gracing the United States one-dollar bill for over a century.

Stuart's prolific career saw him produce portraits of approximately one thousand individuals, including the first six Presidents of the United States. His works are housed in esteemed art institutions across the United States and the United Kingdom, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Frick Collection in New York City, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
