Gina Bachauer

Gina Bachauer, born on May 21, 1913, was a distinguished Greek classical pianist and composer whose remarkable talent captivated audiences across the globe. From an early age, she displayed a profound interest in the piano, leading her to graduate from the prestigious Athens Conservatory. Her studies under renowned musicians Alfred Cortot and Sergei Rachmaninoff further honed her skills, allowing her to excel in performing Romantic piano concertos.

During World War II, Bachauer's dedication to music took her to the Middle East, where she played hundreds of concerts for Allied troops while residing in Egypt. This period marked a significant chapter in her life, as she balanced her commitment to her art with her desire to uplift those in challenging circumstances. Following the war, she continued to tour extensively throughout the United States and Europe, giving over one hundred concerts each year and solidifying her reputation as a leading pianist.

In addition to her live performances, Bachauer was an accomplished recording artist, collaborating with various orchestras and showcasing her talent as a soloist. Her contributions to the musical world were recognized with an honorary doctorate from the University of Utah, and she was affectionately dubbed the 'queen of pianists' during her illustrious career. The Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation was established in her honor, celebrating her legacy and influence in the realm of classical music.

On a personal note, Bachauer married music conductor Alec Sherman, who also served as her manager, supporting her endeavors throughout her career. She passed away at the age of sixty-three during the Athens Festival, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire musicians today.
