Gino Bartali

Gino Bartali, born on July 18, 1914, was a legendary figure in the world of cycling, known affectionately as 'Ginettaccio.' Before the outbreak of the Second World War, he established himself as the most celebrated Italian cyclist, achieving remarkable victories that would etch his name in the annals of sports history.

His illustrious career includes winning the Giro d'Italia twice, first in 1936 and again in 1937, followed by a triumphant Tour de France in 1938. Bartali's prowess on the road did not wane after the war; he returned to claim further glory with another Giro d'Italia victory in 1946 and a second Tour de France title in 1948. This last win marked a significant milestone, as it created the largest gap between victories in the prestigious race.

Beyond his cycling achievements, Bartali's legacy is also defined by his courageous actions during World War II. In September 2013, thirteen years after his passing, he was posthumously honored as a 'Righteous Among the Nations' by Yad Vashem, recognizing his efforts to save Jewish lives during a dark chapter in history.
