Gintautas Umaras

Gintautas Umaras, born on May twentieth, nineteen sixty-three, is a distinguished retired track and road racing cyclist from Lithuania. He made a significant mark in the world of cycling by representing the USSR at the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul, South Korea. During these games, Umaras showcased his exceptional talent by winning gold medals in both the men's 4 km individual pursuit and the men's team pursuit, alongside notable teammates Viatcheslav Ekimov, Dmitry Nelyubin, and Artūras Kasputis.

Throughout his career, Umaras primarily competed for the Soviet Union and trained at the Dynamo sports society in Klaipėda. His professional road cycling career spanned from nineteen eighty-nine to nineteen ninety-one, during which he achieved remarkable feats, including breaking several world records. Notably, he set records in the men's 5 km individual pursuit in nineteen eighty-four and in the men's 4 km individual pursuit in nineteen eighty-five, nineteen eighty-six, and nineteen eighty-seven. In nineteen eighty-eight, he also contributed to a world record in the men's 4 km team pursuit.

In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Umaras played a pivotal role in the establishment of the National Olympic Committee of Lithuania following the country's independence from the Soviet Union. His leadership was recognized when he was appointed as one of its vice presidents, further solidifying his commitment to the development of sports in Lithuania.

Beyond his contributions to cycling and sports administration, Gintautas Umaras, along with his brother Mindaugas, operates several sports equipment shops in Vilnius and Klaipėda, continuing to influence the sporting community in Lithuania.
