Giraut de Bornelh

Giraut de Bornelh, born circa 1138 in the Limousin region of France, emerged from humble beginnings in Bourney, near Excideuil. He became a prominent troubadour, associated with the castle of the viscount of Limoges, and is celebrated for his contributions to the lyrical tradition of the time.

Renowned for formalizing the 'light' style, or trobar leu, Giraut's poetic works reflect a blend of lyricism and humor, despite their high moral tone that may seem rebarbative to modern audiences. His reputation soared during the 13th century, earning him the title of Master of the Troubadours.

His poetry was first published in various collections, including Millot's Histoire litteraire des troubadours in seventeen seventy-four and Raynouard's Choix des poésies originales des troubadours in eighteen sixteen. Notably, his works were also featured in Alan R. Press' Anthology of Troubadour Lyric Poetry in nineteen seventy-one, with an English edition by Ruth V. Sharma released in nineteen eighty-nine.

Giraut's influence extended beyond his lifetime, as he was recognized by literary giants such as Dante, who placed him in Paradise as a poeta rectitudinis, and Petrarch, who referred to him as the 'master of the troubadours.' His legacy continues to resonate, showcasing the enduring appeal of his artistry.
