Girolamo Cassar

Girolamo Cassar, born in 1520, was a distinguished Maltese architect and military engineer whose contributions significantly shaped the architectural landscape of Valletta. As the resident engineer of the Order of St. John, he played a pivotal role in the development of the city, initially serving as an assistant to the renowned Francesco Laparelli.

In 1567, Cassar was admitted into the Order, marking a significant milestone in his career. He eventually took over the construction project of Valletta, where he showcased his exceptional skills and vision. His work included the design of numerous public, religious, and private buildings that defined the new capital.

Among his most notable creations are St John's Co-Cathedral, the Grandmaster's Palace, and the auberges, each reflecting his architectural prowess and dedication to the city. Cassar's legacy continued through his son, Vittorio Cassar, who followed in his father's footsteps as an architect and engineer.
