Gisela Januszewska

Gisela Januszewska, born on January twenty-second, eighteen sixty-seven, was a pioneering Austrian physician and obstetrician. After earning her medical degree in Switzerland, she briefly practiced in Germany before making history as the first female physician in Banja Luka, a town with a significant Serbian population in Bosnia Herzegovina, during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Her dedication to her profession and her community was evident throughout her career. Gisela's contributions during the First World War earned her the highest decorations, recognizing her exceptional service and commitment to social activism in Austria in the years that followed.

Tragically, her life took a dark turn during the Second World War when she was deported to a Nazi concentration camp. Gisela Januszewska's remarkable journey came to an end there, but her legacy as a trailblazer in medicine and a champion for her community endures.
