Gisulf I of Friuli

Gisulf I of Friuli, likely the inaugural duke of Friuli, emerged as a significant figure in the Lombard conquest of Italy. Born into a noble lineage around the year six hundred, he was the nephew of Alboin, the first king of the Lombards in Italy. Following the Lombard victory in the region, Alboin appointed Gisulf as duke circa five hundred sixty-nine, marking the beginning of his influential reign.

Before ascending to the dukedom, Gisulf served as Alboin's marpahis, a role akin to a master of the horse or shield-bearer. His capabilities and character earned him the description from Paul the Deacon as “a man suitable in every way.” Demonstrating his leadership aspirations, Gisulf sought Alboin's permission to select the clans, or faras, he would govern in Friuli, a request that was graciously granted.

With this authority, Gisulf strategically chose the families that would establish their roots in Friuli, thereby solidifying his status as a leader, or ducior. His responsibilities included ensuring the safety of the Venetian plain, which necessitated a swift response to any threats. To aid in this endeavor, Alboin provided him with a substantial herd of brood mares, known for their strength and endurance, enhancing his capabilities as a military leader.

Gisulf I reigned during the pivotal Rule of the Dukes from five hundred seventy-five to five hundred eighty-five. His legacy continued through his nephew, Gisulf II, who succeeded him, ensuring that his influence would resonate in the region long after his time.
