Giuseppe Caprio

Giuseppe Caprio, born on November 15, 1914, just outside Naples, Italy, was a distinguished figure in the Roman Catholic Church, serving as a diplomat, priest, and bishop. His journey began at the Gregorian University in Rome, where he pursued his studies before being ordained in 1938. Caprio's early career took him to China, where he dedicated four years of service, followed by postings in Vietnam and Taiwan.

From 1959 to 1967, he held the significant role of internuncio and later pro-nuncio to China, before transitioning to serve as pro-nuncio to India from 1967 to 1969. His expertise led him to the Roman Curia, where he took on various responsibilities, including secretary of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See and roles within the Secretariat of State, working closely with Pope John Paul I.

In 1979, Caprio was appointed President of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See, and two years later, he became the President of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See, a position he held until his retirement in 1990. His contributions to the Church were recognized when he was elevated to the cardinalate in 1979, becoming Cardinal-Deacon of S. Maria Ausiliatrice in Via Tuscolana, and later Cardinal-Priest of Santa Maria della Vittoria.

Cardinal Caprio was not only a prominent ecclesiastical figure but also a member of the Constantinian Order and a Knight of St. Januarius. His motto, "Pax in virtute" (peace in power), encapsulated his approach to his service and leadership within the Church. He passed away on October 15, 2005, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and commitment to his faith.
