Giuseppe Taddei

Giuseppe Taddei, born on June twenty-sixth, nineteen sixteen, in Genoa, Italy, was a distinguished Italian baritone whose remarkable career spanned several decades. He began his musical journey in Rome, where he made his professional debut in nineteen thirty-six as the Herald in Wagner's Lohengrin. His early years were marked by performances at the Rome Opera, which were interrupted when he was conscripted into the army in nineteen forty-two.

After the tumult of World War II, Taddei returned to the opera scene, captivating audiences with his talent. He graced the Vienna State Opera for two seasons before making his London debut in nineteen forty-seven at the Cambridge Theatre. The following year, he expanded his repertoire further, debuting at prestigious venues such as the Salzburg Festival, La Scala in Milan, and the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples.

His American debut came in nineteen fifty-seven at the San Francisco Opera, followed by a performance with the Lyric Opera of Chicago in nineteen fifty-nine. Taddei was a regular performer at the Royal Opera House in London from nineteen sixty to nineteen sixty-seven, showcasing his versatility in both comedic and dramatic roles.

Throughout his illustrious career, Taddei portrayed a wide array of characters, including the two Figaros in The Marriage of Figaro and The Barber of Seville, as well as iconic roles such as Don Giovanni, Rigoletto, and Scarpia in Tosca. His vocal longevity was remarkable, allowing him to perform well into his later years, culminating in a debut at the Metropolitan Opera on September twenty-fifth, nineteen eighty-five, in the title role of Falstaff at the age of sixty-nine.

Giuseppe Taddei left behind a rich legacy of recordings, including notable performances as Figaro and Leporello in the Carlo Maria Giulini renditions, as well as Macbeth opposite Birgit Nilsson, and both Scarpia and Falstaff in productions conducted by Herbert von Karajan.
