Giuseppe Valadier

Giuseppe Valadier, born on April 14, 1762, was a prominent Italian architect and designer who played a pivotal role in the Neoclassical movement in Italy. His expertise extended beyond architecture to encompass urban planning and archaeology, making him a multifaceted figure in the cultural landscape of his time.

As a teacher at the Accademia di San Luca, Valadier influenced a generation of architects while simultaneously engaging in groundbreaking archaeological work. He was known for his meticulous restoration of significant monuments, including the Milvian Bridge in 1805 and the Arch of Titus in Rome between 1819 and 1821.

Valadier's dedication to preserving history was evident in his efforts to retrace the ancient line of the Via Flaminia in 1805. His restoration of Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola's Church of Sant'Andrea in Via Flaminia not only revived a neglected structure but also inspired his own design of the Church of Santa Maria della Salute in Fiumicino, which served as the newly-established port for Rome.
