Giuseppina Strepponi, born on September eighth, eighteen fifteen in Lodi, was a celebrated Italian operatic soprano whose remarkable talent left an indelible mark on the world of opera. She is perhaps best known as the second wife of the illustrious composer Giuseppe Verdi, with whom she shared both a personal and professional journey that spanned decades.
Strepponi's contributions to Verdi's early successes are noteworthy, particularly her portrayal of Abigaille in the world premiere of Nabucco in eighteen forty-two. A highly skilled singer, she excelled in the bel canto repertoire, captivating audiences with her performances in operas by renowned composers such as Vincenzo Bellini, Gaetano Donizetti, and Gioachino Rossini. Notably, Donizetti crafted the title role of his opera Adelia specifically for her, highlighting her exceptional vocal abilities.
Her career, however, was not without its challenges. Strepponi faced the pressures of overwork, endured at least three known pregnancies, and ultimately experienced vocal deterioration that led to her retirement from the stage by the age of thirty-one in eighteen forty-six. Following her retirement, she relocated to Paris to pursue a new path as a singing teacher.
Strepponi's relationship with Verdi began in eighteen thirty-nine with his first opera, Oberto, and evolved into a romantic partnership by eighteen forty-seven. The couple lived together in Paris before moving to Busseto in eighteen forty-nine, eventually marrying in eighteen fifty-nine. Their bond remained strong until the end of her life, which concluded on November fourteenth, eighteen ninety-seven in Villanova sull'Arda.
