Glaucias of Taulantii

Glaucias of Taulantii was a prominent ruler of the Taulantian kingdom, located in what is now modern-day Albania. His reign, which spanned the latter half of the fourth century BC, saw the Taulantian kingdom play a significant role in southern Illyrian affairs. Glaucias first entered the historical record in 335 BC, when he allied with Cleitus, the son of Bardylis, to oppose Alexander the Great at the battle of Pelium. Despite their efforts, they faced defeat, leading Cleitus to seek refuge within Glaucias' territories, which Alexander chose not to pursue due to other pressing matters.

Nearly two decades later, Glaucias emerged again in history by providing sanctuary to the young Pyrrhus, whose father Aeacides had been ousted from Epirus. This act of defiance against Cassander, who sought to control Epirus and offered Glaucias a substantial sum of two hundred talents to abandon the child, showcased Glaucias' commitment to his allies. However, this decision led to conflict, as the Macedonian king soon invaded Glaucias' lands and defeated him in battle.

Despite the treaty that followed, which required Glaucias to refrain from hostilities against Cassander's allies, he retained Pyrrhus at his court. Following the death of Alcetas II of Epirus in 307 BC, Glaucias seized the opportunity to invade Epirus, successfully placing the twelve-year-old Pyrrhus on the throne. His reign was marked by frequent conflicts with neighboring states, particularly Apollonia and Epidamnos, which were in close proximity to his territories. In 312 BC, he achieved a significant victory by gaining control of Epidamnus.

Although the exact date of Glaucias' death remains unknown, it is evident that he was still in power in 302 BC when Pyrrhus returned to his court to attend the wedding of one of Glaucias' sons. His legacy as a ruler who navigated the complexities of alliances and conflicts in a tumultuous era remains significant in the history of the Illyrian kingdoms.
