Glen Sather

Glen Sather, a prominent figure in the world of ice hockey, was born on September second, nineteen forty-three, in High River, Alberta. He grew up in Wainwright, Alberta, where his passion for the sport began. Sather's career as a professional ice hockey player spanned over a decade, during which he played as a left winger in both the WHA and NHL, showcasing his skills with several teams.

Transitioning from player to coach, Sather made a significant impact on the Edmonton Oilers during the 1980s, leading the team to four Stanley Cup victories. His ability to attract exceptional talent, including the legendary Wayne Gretzky, was pivotal in establishing the Oilers as a dominant force in hockey. Gretzky himself has credited Sather, alongside his father Walter, as one of his most important mentors.

Beyond his coaching achievements, Sather played a crucial role in the development of Canadian national teams, contributing to their success in the 1984 Canada Cup, the 1994 Ice Hockey World Championship, and the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. His influence extended into team ownership as well, where he, along with Brian Burke and Darryl Porter, owned the Tri-City Americans until two thousand five, later acquiring a WHL expansion team that became the Chilliwack Bruins.

After stepping down as the general manager of the New York Rangers in July two thousand fifteen, Sather continued to serve as the team's president until April four, two thousand nineteen, and remained involved as a senior advisor and alternate governor until June twenty-six, two thousand twenty-four. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in nineteen ninety-seven, Sather is affectionately known by his nickname, 'Slats.' He currently resides in Rye, New York during the season and enjoys his off-seasons in Palm Springs, California, with a home also in Banff, Alberta.
