Hailing from Santa Monica, California, she began her acting journey in high school and later attended the University of California, Berkeley. Her career took off in theater, where she performed in local productions and summer stock in both Los Angeles and New York City.

In nineteen thirty-two, Stuart signed a film contract with Universal Pictures, marking the beginning of her illustrious film career. She starred in several notable films, including the horror classics The Old Dark House and The Invisible Man, as well as in beloved Shirley Temple musicals like Poor Little Rich Girl and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Her role as Queen Anne of Austria in the musical comedy The Three Musketeers further showcased her versatility.
