Godfrey of Bouillon

Godfrey of Bouillon, born in 1060, emerged as a pivotal figure during the First Crusade, ultimately becoming the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem from 1099 to 1100. Initially hesitant to accept the title of king, he chose to govern as prince, adopting the title Advocatus Sancti Sepulchri, or Advocate of the Holy Sepulchre.

As the second son of Eustace II, Count of Boulogne, Godfrey inherited the Lordship of Bouillon in 1076, a territory located in present-day Belgium. His political acumen was recognized in 1087 when Emperor Henry IV appointed him Duke of Lower Lorraine, a reward for his loyalty during the Great Saxon Revolt.

In 1096, alongside his brothers Eustace III and Baldwin of Boulogne, Godfrey joined the ranks of the First Crusade. His military prowess was evident in key battles at Nicaea, Dorylaeum, and Antioch, culminating in a significant role during the capture of Jerusalem in 1099. Following the refusal of Raymond IV, Count of Toulouse, to lead the new kingdom, Godfrey accepted the mantle of leadership and solidified his reign by defeating the Fatimids at Ascalon shortly thereafter, effectively concluding the First Crusade.

Godfrey's reign, though brief, was marked by his dedication to the Christian cause and his strategic leadership. He passed away in July 1100, leaving behind a legacy that would be carried on by his brother Baldwin, who succeeded him as King of Jerusalem.
