Gojko Šušak

Gojko Šušak, born on March sixteenth, nineteen forty-five, in Široki Brijeg, Bosnia and Herzegovina, was a prominent Bosnian-Croat politician. He began his academic journey at the University of Rijeka in nineteen sixty-three, but in nineteen sixty-nine, he emigrated to Canada. There, he established himself in the restaurant and construction industries, gaining recognition within the Croatian diaspora in North America over the following decades.

In the late nineteen eighties, Šušak became a close ally of Franjo Tuđman, the leader of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), who was advocating for Croatia's independence from Yugoslavia. This partnership proved pivotal as Šušak returned to Croatia in nineteen ninety, shortly after Tuđman was elected president. He was appointed Minister of Emigration, where he played a crucial role in securing economic support from Croatian emigrants.

By early nineteen ninety-one, Šušak transitioned to the role of Deputy Minister of Defence, and later that September, he was appointed Minister of Defence. His tenure, which lasted until his death in nineteen ninety-eight, marked the longest in Croatian history. During the Croatian War of Independence, he was instrumental in reorganizing and modernizing the Croatian Army, elevating it to a regional power.

Šušak was a key figure in planning significant military operations, including Operation Storm in nineteen ninety-five, which effectively concluded the war in Croatia. He also supported the Croatian Republic of Herzeg-Bosnia during the Croat–Bosniak War from nineteen ninety-two to nineteen ninety-four and played a role in brokering the Dayton Agreement in nineteen ninety-five. His close relationships with the United States Department of Defense further solidified his influence in military affairs.
