Gongyang of Goryeo

Gongyang of Goryeo, born Wang Yo on March 9, 1345, holds the distinction of being the thirty-fourth and final monarch of the Goryeo Dynasty in Korea. His lineage traces back to Duke Yangyang, who was the brother of the notable King Huijong, establishing a royal connection that underscored his claim to the throne.

His reign, however, was marked by significant turmoil and change. As the last ruler of Goryeo, Gongyang faced mounting challenges that ultimately led to his deposition. In a pivotal moment in Korean history, he was overthrown by Yi Sŏnggye, a military leader who would go on to found the Joseon Dynasty, signaling the end of Goryeo's long-standing rule.

Gongyang's life came to a close on May 17, 1394, but his legacy remains a crucial part of Korea's historical narrative. His reign encapsulates the transition from one of Korea's most storied dynasties to a new era, reflecting the complexities of power and governance during a transformative period.
