Gorakhnath

Gorakhnath, a revered figure in Hindu philosophy, emerged in the early 11th century as a prominent yogi, mahasiddha, and saint. He is celebrated as the founder of the Nath Hindu monastic movement in India and is recognized as one of the two disciples of the esteemed Matsyendranath. His followers, known as Jogi, Gorakhnathi, Darshani, or Kanphata, continue to uphold his teachings and practices.

Regarded as a Maha-yogi, or 'great yogi,' Gorakhnath holds a significant place in Hindu tradition. He is one of the nine saints, or Navnath, who form a spiritual lineage with Shiva as their first teacher. Hagiographies depict him as a timeless being, appearing across various ages, emphasizing the importance of the unbiased search for Truth rather than adhering to a specific metaphysical theory.

Gorakhnath's teachings champion Yoga, spiritual discipline, and the enlightened guidance of a realized master, or Guru, as essential pathways to achieving samadhi, or spiritual liberation. His influence has permeated rural India, where numerous monasteries and temples are dedicated to him, particularly in the city of Gorakhpur, which bears his name.

In Nepal, Gorakhnath is venerated as the patron saint of the nation and was historically recognized as the official patron deity of the ruling kings until the monarchy's abolition in two thousand and eight. Additionally, the Siddhar tradition in Tamil Nadu reveres him as one of the eighteen esteemed Siddhars, further solidifying his legacy across diverse regions.
