Gordon Lockhart Bennett, born on October tenth, nineteen twelve, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, was a distinguished Canadian teacher and politician. He pursued his education at Acadia University, earning a Bachelor of Science in nineteen thirty-seven and a Master of Science in Chemistry in nineteen forty-seven. His teaching career began in nineteen thirty-nine when he joined the faculty of the Chemistry department at Prince of Wales College.
In March nineteen sixty-six, Bennett took on a leadership role as the president of the Dominion Curling Association, succeeding Frank Sargent. That same year, he entered the political arena as a Liberal candidate, representing the fifth district of Queens. His political career flourished as he was re-elected in nineteen seventy and nineteen seventy-four, during which he held several ministerial positions under Premier Alex Campbell, including President of the Executive Council, Minister of Education, Minister of Justice, Provincial Secretary, and Chairman of the Provincial Centennial Commission.
Bennett served as the twenty-first Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island from October twenty-four, nineteen seventy-four, to January fourteen, nineteen eighty. His contributions to both education and politics were recognized when he was inducted into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame as a builder. In nineteen eighty-three, he was honored as an Officer of the Order of Canada and was made a Knight of Grace of the Order of St. John in nineteen seventy-five.
