Graeme Obree

Graeme Obree, born on 11 September 1965, is a renowned Scottish racing cyclist, famously nicknamed 'the Flying Scotsman' after the iconic steam locomotive. His remarkable career is highlighted by his two world hour record achievements in July 1993 and April 1994, alongside his victories as the individual pursuit world champion in both 1993 and 1995. Obree's innovative spirit is exemplified by his creation of the Old Faithful bicycle, which featured unconventional components, including bearings sourced from a washing machine.

Despite his talent, Obree faced challenges in his professional journey, including being dismissed from a French cycling team before even competing in his first race. He also represented Scotland in the men's individual pursuit at the 1996 Summer Olympics, showcasing his dedication to the sport on an international stage.

Obree's contributions to cycling extend beyond his competitive achievements; he is recognized for his radical innovations in bicycle design and riding positions. However, his creativity was met with resistance when cycling authorities banned the unique positions his designs necessitated. Open about his struggles with bipolar disorder and depression, Obree has bravely shared his experiences, including three suicide attempts, to inspire fellow athletes to address their mental health openly.

His life story has been brought to the screen in the 2006 film 'The Flying Scotsman' and the documentary 'Battle Mountain: Graeme Obree's Story,' which chronicles his journey to compete in the 2013 World Human Powered Speed Championships in Battle Mountain, Nevada. In recognition of his contributions to sports, he was inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in March 2010.
