Grand Duke Andrei Vladimirovich of Russia

Grand Duke Andrei Vladimirovich of Russia, born on May second, eighteen seventy-nine, was the youngest son of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich and a grandson of Emperor Alexander II. As a first cousin to Nicholas II, the last emperor of Russia, Andrei was born into a lineage steeped in royal tradition.

In nineteen hundred, he began a notable affair with the renowned ballerina Mathilde Kschessinska, becoming the third grand duke to be captivated by her charm. Following a military path, he graduated from the Alexandrovskaya Military Law Academy in Saint Petersburg in nineteen oh five, and held various military roles during the reign of Emperor Nicholas II from eighteen ninety-four to nineteen seventeen, although he did not achieve significant distinction.

In nineteen eleven, he ascended to the position of senator and was promoted to Major General in the Imperial Russian Army in nineteen fifteen. His involvement in World War I was largely removed from the front lines, as he spent much of the conflict at the General Staff headquarters or engaged in ceremonial duties in Saint Petersburg.

As the Russian monarchy faced its demise in February nineteen seventeen, Grand Duke Andrei left the capital to join his mother in Kislovodsk, where he remained for three years. Following the October Revolution in nineteen seventeen, he was briefly detained with his brother, Grand Duke Boris, but they managed to escape. In March nineteen twenty, he became the last grand duke to leave revolutionary Russia.

In nineteen twenty-one, he married Mathilde Kschessinska and acknowledged her son Vladimir as his own. The couple resided in the South of France until nineteen twenty-nine, after which they settled permanently in Paris, where Kschessinska established a ballet school. After World War II, Grand Duke Andrei faced financial difficulties, and at the age of seventy-seven, he passed away as the last surviving Russian grand duke born in Imperial Russia.
