Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich of Russia

Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich of Russia, born on September sixth, eighteen ninety-one, was a notable figure in the Russian imperial family, being the son of Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich and a grandson of Tsar Alexander II. His lineage connected him to several European royals, including Tsar Nicholas II and King George II of Greece. Dmitri's early life was marred by tragedy, as he lost his mother and faced his father's banishment from Russia due to a marriage to a commoner in nineteen hundred and two.

Raised in Moscow by his uncle, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, and his aunt, Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, Dmitri spent much of his youth in the company of Tsar Nicholas II, who regarded him almost as a foster son. Following a military path, he graduated from the Nicholas Cavalry College and was commissioned as a cornet in the Horse Guards Regiment. An accomplished equestrian, he represented Russia in the Olympic Games of nineteen twelve in Stockholm.

Despite his prominent position within the imperial court, Dmitri was more drawn to a life of excitement than to military service. His friendship with Felix Yusupov led him to participate in the assassination of the mystic Grigori Rasputin, who was perceived as a negative influence on the Tsar and his family. Following the upheaval of the Russian Revolution, Dmitri found himself banished to the war front in Persia, from where he managed to escape and emigrate to Western Europe.

His life in exile took him briefly to England and then to Paris during the nineteen twenties, where he had a brief but scandalous affair with the renowned fashion designer Coco Chanel. In nineteen twenty-six, he married American heiress Audrey Emery, with whom he had a son before their divorce in nineteen thirty-seven. As the youngest Grand Duke to survive the revolution, Dmitri became a prominent figure in the Russian émigré community, though he showed little interest in politics, supporting instead the claims of his cousin, Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich.

By the onset of World War II, Dmitri's health was deteriorating, and he ultimately succumbed to tuberculosis in Davos, Switzerland, at the age of fifty. His life story reflects the tumultuous changes of the early twentieth century and the enduring legacy of the Russian imperial family.
