Grant Devine

Grant Devine, born on July fifth, nineteen forty-four, is a prominent Canadian politician and economist who served as the eleventh premier of Saskatchewan from nineteen eighty-two to nineteen ninety-one. Before his political career, he was an educator at the University of Saskatchewan, where he taught agricultural marketing and consumer economics.

Devine's political journey began when he became the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan in nineteen seventy-nine. Under his leadership, the party achieved a significant victory in the nineteen eighty-two election. His time in office was characterized by a series of tax reductions, the privatization of state-owned enterprises, and increased financial support for farmers, although it also saw the provincial debt quadruple.

Re-elected in nineteen eighty-six, Devine's government faced challenges that culminated in a loss during the nineteen ninety-one election. His tenure left a complex legacy, as he was noted for implementing neoliberal economic policies that shifted Saskatchewan towards a market-based economy, moving away from the previous governance styles of the Co-operative Commonwealth and New Democratic Party.

After leaving office, Devine sought a federal nomination with the Conservative Party, which was ultimately declined. He later ran as an Independent in the two thousand four federal election but was unsuccessful. His time as premier, marked by both achievements and controversies, contributed to the founding of the Saskatchewan Party, reflecting the growing divide between urban and rural interests in the province.
