Gratien Gélinas

Gratien Gélinas, born on December eighth, nineteen oh nine, was a pioneering figure in Canadian theatre and film, celebrated for his multifaceted contributions as a writer, playwright, actor, director, and producer. His works, including the iconic 'Tit-Coq' in nineteen forty-eight and 'Bousille et les Justes' in nineteen fifty-nine, have left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Quebec. Gélinas is also renowned for his series of satirical revues known as the Fridolinades, which featured the beloved character Fridolin, a symbol of the Quebec spirit.

Fridolin, a poor boy from Montreal, became a cultural icon, embodying the optimism and resilience of the Quebecois people. His character, often clad in a tri-colour Canadiens hockey jersey, knee socks, and suspenders, spoke a unique form of French that resonated with the local populace, setting it apart from the more formal continental French. This connection to the streets of Montreal helped establish Fridolin as one of the first distinctly Canadian heroes of the stage, earning Gélinas the affectionate title of the first playwright 'de chez nous' (from our place).

One of his notable plays, 'Hier, les enfants dansaient' (Yesterday the Children were Dancing), unfolds over a single night in nineteen sixty-six, reflecting the political turmoil of Quebec during that era. The narrative centers on Pierre Gravel, who grapples with a significant political decision while his sons reveal their involvement with a separatist party, adding layers of tension and drama to the storyline.

In addition to his theatrical achievements, Gélinas founded the Comédie-Canadienne, which thrived until nineteen seventy-two. His contributions to the arts were recognized with numerous accolades, including being named an Officer of the Order of Canada in nineteen sixty-seven and later promoted to Companion in nineteen eighty-nine. He was also honored as a Knight of the National Order of Quebec in nineteen eighty-five and received an honorary doctorate from the Royal Military College of Canada in nineteen eighty-nine.

Gratien Gélinas married Huguette Oligny in nineteen seventy-three and was the proud grandfather of several notable figures, including actress and pop singer Mitsou Gélinas. After his passing in nineteen ninety-nine, he was entombed at the Notre Dame des Neiges Cemetery in Montreal. His legacy continues to be celebrated, with the Library and Archives Canada housing recordings and transcriptions of interviews that delve into his remarkable life and career.
