Greg Duhaime

Greg Duhaime, born on August eleventh, nineteen fifty-three in Espanola, Ontario, was a distinguished Canadian track and field athlete. He made his mark as a one-time Canadian record holder in the 3000 metres steeplechase, showcasing his exceptional talent in this demanding event.

Throughout his athletic career, Duhaime achieved remarkable success, becoming a four-time Canadian champion in the men's 3000 m steeplechase from nineteen eighty to nineteen eighty-two and again in nineteen eighty-four. Additionally, he claimed the title of national champion in the men's 5000 metres in nineteen eighty, further solidifying his status as one of Canada's top distance runners.

Despite his impressive achievements, Duhaime's journey was not without challenges. He was among the many athletes who did not compete in the nineteen eighty Summer Olympics due to the boycott against Moscow. Instead, he participated in the Liberty Bell Classic, an alternative meet held in Philadelphia. His resilience shone through when he won a bronze medal at the nineteen eighty-two Commonwealth Games in the steeplechase.

Duhaime was also notable for being one of the few openly gay Olympians of his time, breaking barriers in a sport that was not always accepting. Tragically, he passed away from AIDS in nineteen ninety, leaving behind a legacy of courage and athletic excellence.
