Greg Rutherford, born on November seventeenth, nineteen eighty-six, is a retired British track and field athlete renowned for his specialization in the long jump. His illustrious career saw him represent Great Britain at the Olympics, World and European Championships, and England at the Commonwealth Games. Notably, he is the most recent of only five athletes to achieve the prestigious 'Grand Slam' by winning Olympic, World, European, and Commonwealth titles in the same event, and he is the only athlete to also secure a Diamond League victory.
Rutherford's journey in athletics began with a significant achievement as the European Junior Champion in two thousand five. He made his mark on the senior circuit with a silver medal at the two thousand six European Athletics Championships. Between two thousand twelve and two thousand sixteen, he dominated the long jump scene, clinching gold medals at the two thousand twelve Summer Olympics, the two thousand fourteen Commonwealth Games, the two thousand fourteen and two thousand sixteen European Athletics Championships, and the two thousand fifteen World Athletics Championships. His performance in two thousand fifteen also saw him top the IAAF Diamond League rankings.
His final major medal came in the form of a bronze at the two thousand sixteen Summer Olympics, after which he faced a series of ankle injuries that hindered his performance for the next two years. Ultimately, Rutherford retired from competitive athletics in two thousand eighteen due to these injuries. From September fourth, two thousand fifteen, when he secured his Diamond League victory in Zürich, until his withdrawal from the British Athletics Championships in June two thousand sixteen, he held every available elite outdoor title, including national, continental, World, Olympic, Diamond League, and Commonwealth.
As a testament to his exceptional talent, Rutherford holds the British record for the long jump, both outdoors and indoors, with personal bests of eight point five one meters and eight point two six meters, respectively. He is a five-time national outdoor champion, and his record places him among the top twenty-five all-time long jumpers. In September two thousand twenty-one, he was selected for the British bobsleigh team, but unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preparations for the two thousand twenty-two Winter Olympics.
