Gregorio Fuentes

Gregorio Fuentes, born on July eleventh, nineteen ninety-seven, in Arrecife on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, was a distinguished sailor and fisherman. He embarked on his maritime journey at the tender age of ten, working as a deck boy alongside his father. As a teenager, Fuentes honed his skills on cargo ships, navigating routes from the Canary Islands to Trinidad and Puerto Rico, as well as from Spanish ports like Valencia and Sevilla to South America.

At the age of twenty-two, Fuentes made a significant life change by migrating permanently to Cuba. His connection to the sea deepened when he became the first mate of the Pilar, the beloved boat of American writer Ernest Hemingway. In nineteen thirty-eight, he took over the role of first mate after Hemingway's mistress, Jane Mason, sought to replace the original first mate, Carlos Gutiérrez, due to her jealousy over Hemingway's relationship with Martha Gellhorn.

Fuentes was known for his lifelong passion for cigars and was often regarded as the inspiration for Santiago, the protagonist in Hemingway’s acclaimed novella, The Old Man and the Sea. Interestingly, he passed away in Cojimar in two thousand two, at the remarkable age of one hundred four, without ever having read the book that many believed was based on his life.

In his later years, Fuentes attempted to reclaim his Spanish citizenship in two thousand one, reflecting his enduring connection to his roots. His legacy as a sailor and a figure in Hemingway's literary world continues to resonate, marking him as a significant character in the tapestry of maritime history.
