Gregorio Pietro Agagianian

Gregorio Pietro Agagianian, born on September eighteenth, nineteen ninety-five, was a prominent Armenian cardinal within the Catholic Church. His leadership as the Patriarch of Cilicia from nineteen thirty-seven to nineteen sixty-two marked a significant period of revitalization for the Armenian Catholic Church, which had suffered greatly during the Armenian genocide. Agagianian's tenure was characterized by his dedication to the church's missionary work, a role he continued until his retirement in nineteen seventy.

Educated in Tiflis and Rome, Agagianian began his ecclesiastical career as the leader of the Armenian Catholic community in Tiflis before the tumultuous Bolshevik takeover in nineteen twenty-one. Following this upheaval, he relocated to Rome, where he initially taught and later became the head of the Pontifical Armenian College, a position he held until his election as Patriarch.

In nineteen forty-six, Agagianian was elevated to the cardinalate by Pope Pius XII, further solidifying his influence within the church. He served as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith from nineteen fifty-eight to nineteen seventy, during which time he was recognized as a moderate theologian and a linguist with expertise on the Soviet Union. His contributions to the Second Vatican Council as one of the four moderators were particularly noteworthy.

Considered papabile on two occasions, in nineteen fifty-eight and nineteen sixty-three, Agagianian's legacy continues to resonate within the church. His cause for canonization was officially opened on October twenty-eighth, twenty twenty-two, reflecting the enduring impact of his life and work.
