Gregory of Narek

Gregory of Narek, born in the year nine hundred fifty-one, stands as a towering figure in Armenian literature and theology. A monk and poet, he dedicated his life to the exploration of mystical themes and the expression of profound spiritual insights. His upbringing as the son of a bishop laid a strong foundation for his education and eventual ordination, leading him to serve at Narekavank, a serene monastery located on the southern shores of Lake Van in modern-day Turkey.

Venerated as a saint in both the Armenian Apostolic and Catholic Churches, Gregory's legacy was further solidified when Pope Francis declared him a Doctor of the Church in two thousand fifteen.
