Gregory of Tatev

Gregory of Tatev, born in 1346, emerged as a prominent figure in the Armenian Apostolic Church, recognized for his contributions as a monk, philosopher, teacher, poet, and painter. His early education took place in the revered monasteries of Tatev and Metzop, where he developed a deep understanding of theology and philosophy.

As a staunch Miaphysite, Gregory stood firm against the unification of the Armenian Church with the Roman Catholic Church during a time of significant religious tension. His writings reflect a vigorous defense of the Armenian Apostolic Church's core principles, particularly in his major theological work, the Book of Questions, completed in 1397. This work, along with his treatise against the Tajiks, showcases his commitment to preserving Armenian Christian beliefs against external pressures, including Islam and various heresies.

In addition to his theological writings, Gregory authored several notable works aimed at both clergy and lay readers. His Voskeparik, or “Golden Belly,” serves as a condensed version of the Book of Questions, while his Karozgirk’, or “Book of Sermons,” comprises three hundred forty-four sermons, completed in 1407. His commentaries on the Wisdom Books of Solomon further illustrate his scholarly prowess and have been translated into English in modern times.

Gregory of Tatev's legacy continues to resonate, as evidenced by the unveiling of a monument in his honor on October 16, 2010, in Goris, Armenia. His life and works remain a vital part of understanding the medieval Armenian-Christian perspective on interfaith dialogue and theological resistance.
