Greta Johansson

Greta Johansson, born on January ninth, eighteen ninety-five, was a remarkable Swedish swimmer and diver who made her mark at the 1912 Summer Olympics. Competing in both disciplines, she secured a gold medal in the ten-meter platform event and showcased her versatility by finishing fourth as part of the Swedish four by one hundred meter freestyle relay team.

Her journey into the world of swimming and diving began in the municipal baths of Stockholm, known as Strömbadet. With free tickets provided by her public school, Johansson, like all Swedish children of her time, learned the essential skills of swimming and diving. Her talent quickly became evident as she clinched Swedish titles in the breaststroke in nineteen ten and in the one hundred meter freestyle and high diving in nineteen eleven.

In nineteen thirteen, Johansson emigrated to the United States, where she initially worked as a shop assistant. It was here that she married Ernst Brandsten, a fellow Swedish diver who also competed at the 1912 Olympics. Together, they dedicated their lives to nurturing the next generation of athletes, training divers, swimmers, and the water polo team at Stanford University from nineteen fifteen to nineteen forty-eight. They also managed the sports and recreation area at Searsville Lake Park.

Both Greta Johansson and Ernst Brandsten were honored for their contributions to the sport, with Johansson being inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as a diver in nineteen seventy-three, while Brandsten was recognized as a diving coach in nineteen sixty-six. Throughout her career, Johansson proudly represented Stockholms Kappsimningsklubb, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of aquatic sports.
