Gretchen Whitmer

Gretchen Whitmer, born on August twenty-third, nineteen seventy-one, is a prominent American lawyer and politician who has been serving as the forty-ninth governor of Michigan since two thousand nineteen. A member of the Democratic Party, she has a rich history in public service, having represented the Michigan House of Representatives from two thousand one to two thousand six and the Michigan Senate from two thousand six to two thousand fifteen.

Raised in Michigan, Whitmer graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in communication in nineteen ninety-three, followed by a Juris Doctor degree in nineteen ninety-eight. Her political journey began in two thousand when she was elected to the Michigan House. In two thousand six, she won a special election to the state senate, where she made history as the first female Democratic leader from two thousand eleven to two thousand fifteen.

Whitmer gained national recognition in two thousand thirteen for a powerful floor speech during a debate on abortion, where she shared her personal experience of sexual assault. In two thousand sixteen, she briefly served as the prosecutor for Ingham County. Her gubernatorial campaign in two thousand eighteen culminated in a victory over Republican nominee Bill Schuette, the state attorney general.

As governor, Whitmer has prioritized healthcare and infrastructure legislation. In February two thousand twenty, she was chosen to deliver the Democratic response to then-President Donald Trump's State of the Union Address. Her tenure has not been without challenges; in October two thousand twenty, the FBI thwarted a kidnapping plot against her by a far-right militia group. Additionally, from January two thousand twenty-one to February two thousand twenty-five, she served as one of the vice chairs of the Democratic National Committee. In two thousand twenty-two, she was reelected as governor, defeating Republican nominee Tudor Dixon.
