Grete Waitz

Grete Waitz, born on October 1, 1953, was a pioneering Norwegian marathon runner and a dedicated teacher. She made history in 1979 at the New York City Marathon, becoming the first woman to complete the marathon in under two and a half hours, a remarkable achievement that set a new standard in the sport.

Throughout her illustrious career, Waitz dominated the New York City Marathon, securing nine victories in the women's division from 1978 to 1988. This remarkable feat remains the highest number of wins in a single major city marathon, showcasing her unparalleled talent and determination.

In addition to her marathon successes, Waitz earned a silver medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and claimed gold at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki. Her prowess extended beyond marathons, as she was a five-time champion of the World Cross Country Championships, further solidifying her legacy in athletics.

Waitz set world records in the marathon on four occasions and achieved remarkable times in various distances, including the 3000 meters, 8 kilometers, 10 kilometers, 15 kilometers, and 10 miles.
