Gruffudd ap Llywelyn, born in the year one thousand, emerged as a pivotal figure in Welsh history. He was the only king to successfully unite all of Wales, a remarkable achievement that marked his reign from one thousand fifty-five to one thousand sixty-three. Prior to this unification, Gruffudd ruled as King of Gwynedd and Powys from one thousand thirty-nine to one thousand fifty-five, showcasing his leadership across significant regions of Wales.

As the son of Llywelyn ap Seisyll, the King of Gwynedd, and Angharad, the daughter of Maredudd ab Owain, King of Deheubarth, Gruffudd was deeply rooted in the royal lineage. His heritage also traced back to the esteemed Hywel Dda, a figure renowned for his contributions to Welsh law and governance, making Gruffudd a significant descendant of a legacy that shaped Welsh identity.
