Guadalupe Victoria

Guadalupe Victoria, born José Miguel Ramón Adaucto Fernández y Félix on September twenty-nine, seventeen eighty-six, was a distinguished Mexican general and politician. He played a pivotal role in the Mexican War of Independence against the Spanish Empire, emerging as one of the most prominent independence generals. His military career began under the command of General José María Morelos, where he participated in significant battles such as the siege of Cuautla and the capture of Oaxaca.

After the war, Victoria's political career flourished. Following the downfall of the First Mexican Empire and the ratification of the Constitution of eighteen twenty-four, he was elected as the first president of the United Mexican States. His presidency marked a significant period in Mexican history, during which he established diplomatic relations with several nations, founded the National Museum, and promoted education. Notably, he also ratified the border with the United States and expelled the remaining Spaniards from the country.

Victoria's leadership was characterized by his commitment to republican ideals, which put him at odds with Emperor Agustín de Iturbide. After de Iturbide's exile, Victoria became part of the Provisional Government and was later elected president. He was the only president to complete his full term in over thirty years of independent Mexico, peacefully transferring power to General Vicente Guerrero in eighteen twenty-nine.

In addition to his presidency, Victoria served as a senator for Durango and Veracruz, governor of Puebla, and president of the senate. He played a crucial role in negotiating an end to the Pastry War with France in eighteen thirty-eight. Victoria passed away on March twenty-first, eighteen forty-three, at the age of fifty-six, due to epilepsy while receiving medical treatment in the fortress of Perote. His legacy endures, with numerous streets, schools, and cities named in his honor, solidifying his status as a national hero.
