Guillaume Le Vasseur de Beauplan

Guillaume Le Vasseur de Beauplan, born in 1595, was a distinguished French-Polish cartographer, military engineer, architect, and engineer. His contributions to the field of cartography are particularly notable, with his most famous work being the General Map of Ukraine, published in 1648. This map, along with others he created, showcased his exceptional skill in depicting the geography of the region, which he referred to as Ukranie or Vkranie.

In addition to his cartographic achievements, Beauplan authored the influential book Description d'Ukranie, first published in 1651 under the title Description des contrés du Royaume de Pologne. This work provided a comprehensive overview of Ukraine and its surroundings, and it was republished and translated into various Western European languages throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, further solidifying his legacy.

Beauplan's expertise as a military engineer and architect also played a significant role in his career, as he applied his knowledge to various projects that contributed to the development of the regions he worked in. His unique perspective as a foreigner in Poland allowed him to document and illustrate the landscapes and cultures of Ukraine with remarkable detail.
