Guillermo Billinghurst

Guillermo Billinghurst, born on July twenty-seventh, eighteen fifty-one, was a prominent Peruvian politician, businessperson, and journalist. He is best remembered for his tenure as the thirty-seventh President of Peru, serving from nineteen twelve to nineteen fourteen. An Anglo-Peruvian by heritage, Billinghurst's surname reflects a locational origin, tracing back to the small town of Billingshurst in Sussex.

As a leading figure in the Democratic Party (El Partido Demócrata), Billinghurst represented the interests of the national bourgeoisie and middle-class citizens in southern Peru. His political stance was characterized by a commitment to the domestic market, standing in stark contrast to the Civilistas, who were aligned with foreign capital and focused on exporting raw materials.

During his presidency, Billinghurst faced significant opposition from conservative and oligarchic factions within the Peruvian Congress. His progressive agenda aimed at advancing social legislation for the working classes was met with resistance, leading him to seek fresh elections as a means to bypass congressional blockades. This move, however, incited a coup d'état orchestrated by the military under the command of Óscar R. Benavides, resulting in Billinghurst's exile to Chile.

Ultimately, his presidency was cut short by the coup, which saw Benavides assume the presidency. Following his exile, Billinghurst's life came to an end shortly thereafter, marking a turbulent chapter in Peruvian political history.
