Guillermo Coria

Guillermo Sebastián Coria, born on January 13, 1982, is a former professional tennis player from Argentina, widely known by his nickname, El Mago, which translates to The Magician in Spanish. His remarkable career saw him reach a peak ranking of world No. 3 in men's singles, a position he achieved in May 2004. Coria's prowess on clay courts was particularly notable, as he secured eight of his nine ATP Tour singles titles on this surface.

During the height of his career in 2003 and 2004, Coria was often regarded as the world's premier clay-court player. His most significant achievement came in 2004 when he reached the final of the French Open. In a dramatic match, he faced Gastón Gaudio and, despite leading two sets to love and having opportunities to serve for the match, he ultimately fell short.

However, Coria's journey was not without its challenges. In the later years of his career, he struggled with injuries and a decline in confidence, which ultimately led to his retirement in 2009 at the young age of twenty-seven. Additionally, between 2001 and 2002, he faced a seven-month suspension due to a positive test for the banned substance nandrolone, a setback that impacted his career.
