Gulab Singh

Gulab Singh, born on October eighteenth, seventeen ninety-two, was a pivotal figure in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. As the first Maharaja of the region, he established the Dogra dynasty, which would play a significant role in shaping the political landscape of northern India.

Initially serving as a commander in the Sikh Empire, Gulab Singh's political acumen became evident during the tumultuous period of the First Anglo-Sikh War. His strategic alliance with the British not only elevated his status but also led to his brief tenure as the prime minister of the Sikh Empire in eighteen forty-six.

That same year marked a turning point in his career when he signed the Treaty of Amritsar with the British. This landmark agreement formalized the establishment of Jammu and Kashmir as a princely state under British suzerainty, transferring lands ceded by the Sikhs in the earlier Treaty of Lahore.
