Gump Worsley

Gump Worsley, born on May 14, 1929, in Montreal, Quebec, was a distinguished Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender. His nickname, 'Gump,' was inspired by his resemblance to the comic-strip character Andy Gump, a moniker that would become synonymous with his legacy in the sport.

Worsley's journey in hockey began in the minor leagues, where he spent the first seven seasons honing his skills before making his NHL debut in 1952 with the New York Rangers. Remarkably, he won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's top rookie, despite playing for a team that finished in last place. However, his career faced a setback when he was demoted the following season after requesting a pay raise.

Returning to the NHL in 1954, Worsley enjoyed a successful tenure with the Rangers, reaching the postseason four times over ten seasons. In the summer of 1963, he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens, where he truly shone. During his time with Montreal, he achieved an impressive postseason record of twenty-nine wins and seven losses, contributing to the team's four Stanley Cup victories in 1965, 1966, 1968, and 1969. His exceptional goaltending earned him the Vezina Trophy in both 1966 and 1968.

Worsley's career continued with the Minnesota North Stars after a trade on February 27, 1970. He remained a regular player until 1974, and on March 29, 1970, he became the sixth goaltender in NHL history to win three hundred games. His contributions to the sport were recognized with his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980, solidifying his status as a hockey legend.
