Gunnar Thoroddsen

Gunnar Thoroddsen, born on December twenty-ninth, nineteen ten, was a prominent figure in Icelandic politics, serving as the prime minister from nineteen eighty to nineteen eighty-three. His political journey began at an early age when he became the youngest individual ever elected to the Althing, Iceland's Parliament, at the age of twenty-three in nineteen thirty-four.

Throughout his career, Gunnar held various significant positions, including mayor of Reykjavík from nineteen forty-seven to nineteen fifty-nine and Minister of Finance from nineteen fifty-nine to nineteen sixty-five. His diplomatic service included a tenure as Iceland's ambassador to Denmark from nineteen sixty-five to nineteen sixty-nine, during which he also sought the presidency in nineteen sixty-eight, aiming to follow in the footsteps of his father-in-law, Ásgeir Ásgeirsson.

In the cabinet of Geir Hallgrímsson, Gunnar served as the minister of industry and social welfare from August twenty-eighth, nineteen seventy-four, to June twenty-seventh, nineteen seventy-eight. His political career took a pivotal turn when he broke away from the Independence Party, collaborating with a few members of parliament to form a new cabinet with the Progressive Party and the People's Alliance, ultimately replacing a minority government.

At the age of sixty-nine, Gunnar became the oldest prime minister in Iceland's history. However, his health declined, preventing him from running in the nineteen eighty-three elections. He concluded his political involvement when his cabinet was succeeded by Steingrímur Hermannsson's administration, passing away shortly thereafter on September twenty-fifth, nineteen eighty-three.
