Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Günther Prien

Günther Prien, born on January 16, 1908, was a distinguished German submariner and commandant during World War II. He is best remembered for his remarkable leadership of the U-boat U-47, which became infamous for its successful missions against Allied shipping.

Under Prien's command, U-47 was credited with sinking over thirty Allied vessels, amounting to approximately two hundred thousand gross register tons. His most notable achievement was the sinking of the British battleship HMS Royal Oak while it was anchored in Scapa Flow, a significant blow to the Royal Navy.

Prien's exceptional skills and daring operations earned him prestigious accolades, making him the first U-boat commander to receive the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. He further distinguished himself by being the first member of the Kriegsmarine to be awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Germany's highest military decoration at the time.
