Guo Xi

Guo Xi, born in the year one thousand twenty, was a distinguished Chinese landscape painter and writer from Henan Province, renowned for his contributions during the Northern Song dynasty. His artistic prowess was not only limited to painting; he was also a court painter and a well-educated literatus, which allowed him to develop a sophisticated system of idiomatic brushstrokes that would influence generations of artists to come.

Among his notable works, 'Early Spring,' created in one thousand seventy-two, stands out for its innovative use of multiple perspectives, a technique he termed 'the angle of totality.' This approach, also known as 'Floating Perspective,' challenged traditional views of spatial representation, highlighting the contrasts between Chinese and Western artistic methods.

Guo Xi's treatise, 'The Lofty Message of Forest and Streams,' delves into the nuances of landscape painting, emphasizing the seasonal variations in clouds and vapours.
