Guor Marial

Guor Mading Maker, known to the world as Guor Marial, was born on April 15, 1984. As a proud member of the Dinka tribe, he has become a symbol of resilience and determination in the realm of athletics. His journey as a marathon runner has not only showcased his exceptional talent but also highlighted the struggles faced by his homeland, South Sudan.

Marial made his Olympic debut at the 2012 Summer Olympics, where he competed in the men's marathon. His participation was particularly poignant, as he chose to run under the Olympic flag rather than that of Sudan, a decision rooted in his commitment to his people amidst the civil war that led to South Sudan's independence. He famously stated, "It would be betraying my people" to compete under the flag of a nation that had caused them suffering.

In 2016, Marial represented South Sudan at the Summer Olympics, marking a historic moment as it was the country's first appearance at the Olympic Games. His story has inspired many, leading to the creation of a film titled 'Runner,' which chronicles his life and the challenges he has overcome.
