Gustav Kalkun

Gustav Kalkun, born on March twenty-second, nineteen ninety-eight, was a distinguished Estonian athlete known for his prowess in discus and hammer throwing. He represented Estonia at the Olympic Games in nineteen twenty-four and nineteen twenty-eight, achieving commendable placements of fifteenth and tenth, respectively. Notably, he had the honor of being the Olympic flag bearer for Estonia during the nineteen twenty-eight Games.

His educational journey began in Riga, Latvia, where he graduated in nineteen sixteen. Kalkun furthered his studies in physical education at institutions in Tartu, Estonia, in nineteen twenty-seven, and Geneva, Switzerland, in nineteen thirty. His commitment to service was evident as he volunteered in World War I and participated in the Estonian War of Independence.

After the wars, Kalkun transitioned into a career in education, serving as a physical education teacher in various cities including Tallinn, Narva, and Tartu. His passion for sports extended beyond teaching; he also took on roles as a referee and a journalist, covering athletics and basketball events.

In nineteen forty-four, with the arrival of Soviet troops in Estonia, Kalkun emigrated to the United States. He became the physical director of the YMCA in London, Ontario, until nineteen fifty, when he moved to a similar position at the YMCA in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. His personal life included a marriage to Waralda Ilmatara Kalkun, who passed away in nineteen sixty-seven. Gustav Kalkun's life came to a close in nineteen seventy-two at a hospital in Windsor, Ontario.

Gustav's legacy continues through his family, including his nephew, actor Karl Kalkun, and Karl's son, sports journalist Kristjan Kalkun.
