Gustave Moynier

Gustave Moynier, born on September twenty-first, eighteen twenty-six, was a prominent Swiss jurist renowned for his extensive involvement in charitable organizations in Geneva. His commitment to humanitarian efforts was evident through his pivotal role in the establishment of the International Committee for Relief to the Wounded, which later evolved into the International Committee of the Red Cross in eighteen seventy-six.

In eighteen sixty-four, Moynier succeeded Guillaume-Henri Dufour as president of the committee, a position he held for an impressive forty-six years. His tenure was marked by significant contributions to the committee's growth and development during its formative years, showcasing his dedication to the cause of humanitarian aid.

Despite his achievements, Moynier was known to be a major rival of Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross. This rivalry did not overshadow his commitment to the organization, as he worked tirelessly to support its mission and expand its reach in the early decades following its inception.
